One Morning Left Interview

At the beginning of this year One Morning Left released their new album Metalcore Superstars. Ultimately it took two years of hard work to get the new album written, recorded, and finished.

One Morning Left is the most “Heavy Metal Finland” as it gets.

LFdM: You are a relatively young group, or at least your line up is recent. Can you tell us how you met and decided to form a band?
Leevi Luoto: Actually the band was founded way back in 2008 but the most recent line up is young! We used to open shows for One Morning Left with my other band, ARF; the guys in OML liked what they saw and asked me to join the band. Niko was found via internet and he send us some super_epic_audition_videos so we decided to add him also! Best. Lineup. Ever.

LFdM: Metalcore Superstars "comes three years after the first EP "Our Sceneration". Usually first albums are published at shorter distances. There was something wrong, or simply you decided to take your time?
Leevi: Our Sceneration was actually the second album. The first was “The BreeTeenz” wich was released in 2011. After “Our  Sceneration” One Morning Left toured alot and the drummer Tomppa decided to leave the band due to personal stuff like family. When me and Niko was added to the band we took our time to get our groove on, you know. We wanted “Metalcore Superstars” to sound something like no other band does but with the old school OML vibe to it so the creation process took its time too.

LFdM: Have you changed something musically basic since the beginning?

Leevi: Like every band should, we want to evolve as musicians all the time; try new stuff, get crazy! Challenging ourselves, getting off our comfort zone. So due to line up changes and our passion for uniqueness change is inevitable!

LFdM: In my review I talked about this album as a mural of a thousand colors that spread like wildfire, a bit like a giant graffiti which comes alive. How do you see it from behind the scenes?
Leevi: Oh wow, that’s beautiful! Thank you! Well creating an album can be considered to be and feel like that; piece by piece it comes together. Sometimes the process is faster, sometimes slower so there was a lot of ups and downs during the creation process. But the overall feeling was happiness; realising that the album will sound unique gave us a lot of positive energy.

LFdM: The punk influence seems rather marked, especially in the free interpretation of the songs, let’s say more aptitude than instrumental. What kind of school had each of you?
Leevi: Some of us has studied music and some of us are selftaught. We all love metalcore, hardcore, punk, music with a huge amount of energy in it and we use them as base to create. Mixing other genres into it comes naturally for us all!

LFdM: When you are very young you tend to be compared with other bands: how the Finnish music scene is evolving? Are you pleased to be compared with other bands or the thing bothers you? There is a band in which you are particularly attached?
Leevi: Finnish music scene basically follows the same trends as the rest of the world, so hardcore based music and djent is in at the moment. Well, the thing is most of the people who hear us and really gets us can’t really compare it to anything haha! Of course there are elements of some bands that we use like the synth stuff from, lets say Enter Shikari and EDM music overall. We aim for uniqueness and you can put us in a “box” if you want but our goal is to sound like One Morning Left :)

LFdM: What are your plans for this year?
Leevi: Touring, making music videos and having lots of fun!

LFdM: Thank you so much Leevi for your time!
